Large Volute

Project Overview

A client contacted our team to assist with the replacement of a damaged 56"x30"x19" cast iron volute casing from a legacy pump system. The component had developed extensive cracks and was deemed unsalvageable through repair welding. Complicating the matter, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) was no longer supporting this model, and no technical documentation or part numbers were available.

Scope of Work

To deliver a replacement part without OEM data, our team executed a full reverse engineering workflow:

Component Scanning & Dimensional Capture

The original volute (approx. 56" × 29.5" × 18.5", ~1,220 lbs) was scanned in full detail using high-resolution 3D scanning equipment. This allowed us to capture the complete geometry, bolt patterns, flange faces, and internal contours.

Reverse Engineering & Modeling

From the scan data, we built a precise 3D CAD model of the volute, replicating all functional features and mating surfaces.

Manufacturing Drawings & Foundry Coordination

Due to the size and weight of the part, the pour exceeded our in-house casting capacity. We worked closely with a trusted partner foundry to develop the casting pattern, select the appropriate cast iron grade, and coordinate all casting and post-cast machining operations.

Outcome

The replacement volute was delivered installation-ready, with fit, form, and function matching the original. By reverse engineering the part without OEM support and coordinating with external foundry resources, we helped the client restore a critical pump system while minimizing operational downtime.

This project highlights our ability to support aging infrastructure through scanning, modeling, and large-scale casting — even when no drawings or specifications exist.
